The Governing Council of Nigeria Education Week has conferred on the University of Calabar the prestigious 'Landmark Achievement Award for Academic Excellence' in acknowledgement of the institution's "impeccable academic records and proven integrity".
According to a letter signed by the Chairperson of the Council, Prof. Sidi Osho, the award is only "given to institutions that have distinguished themselves in academic excellence both in professionalism of lecturers and specifically in the efficiency of their graduands.
The letter indicated that the honour is also in recognition of the commitment demonstrated by the University towards education programmes, activities and the ideals of the Governing Council of Nigeria Education Week.
It added that the Council took cognizance of the institution's "track record of unflinching excellence in research, innovation in academics, institutionalized discipline, strict compliance with admission ethics and promotion of societal values".
The letter explained that the University of Calabar was nominated for the award by the general public and recommended by a panel of judges following a call for nomination advertorial published in The Guardian newspaper editions of August 16 and 18, 2017.
Others to be honoured along with the University of Calabar are Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria's Vice President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former PRESIDENT of Nigeria, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church and Rt. Hon. Emeka Anyaoku, former Sec. Gen. of the Commonwealth of Nations.
