Today I visited one of the IDP camps in Maiduguri, Borno State known as "Bokalis" which accommodates over 5900 displaced persons of two local government areas of the state.
My purpose of visit was to donate edible materials and toiletries to over 1000 children in the camp as well as interact with the IDPs.The thoughts of #BokoHaram devastation may seem like fairy tales until you see first hand it devastation and effects.
Many have lost homes, properties, lives, loved ones and their mind as a result of the menace of this insurgency. It was sad to behold Nigerians who have now become refugees in their country. The thoughts of the Bakassi IDP in Cross River State also came to my mind.
Another picture that gave me chilling smiles was the ecstasy of the kids who were playing football and those running around while playing without any concern. The gratefulness of their parents and beaming hope showed resilience of the Nigerian spirit, that spirit that never dies, that never gives up!
Earlier on I was at the Zonal North East NEMA Offi've to get clearance as regards my visit to the said camp and met a very welcoming Zonal Director who just resumed his official duties three days ago.At the camp I met camp officials and security agencies excited at my visit.
I made it plain that my little token donated was on behalf of myself, the good people of Cross River State and out of love for a truly united Nigeria.I told them that I stand by them in their plight while calling on deepened integration of states via exchange programs by Northern State Secondary Schools and Southern Schools.
I also prayed for special intervention for the North East to ensure mitigation of the devastation of the insurgency and for educational and infrastructural upliftment of the region.I spoke of my believe of a truly united Nigeria, bound in love irrespective of ethnicity or religious differences.
I also called on youths of the region to travel aside the NYSC scheme and make friends across the southern states and vis versa in order to foster our true spirit of brotherhood.I concluded by encouraging the children to grow up in love for God and humanity while taking their studies seriously.
The management of the camp appreciated my visit and said it was the first time someone from our region was visiting their camp.A visit that started with tears ended with joy from the joy I saw on the faces of the kid I carried and those who got their share of the token distributed.
I am a Nigerian...I believe...We believe! We are our brothers keeper!! God bless Nigeria! God bless Cross River State!! God bless Sen Prof Ben Ayade!
