CRUTECH Alumni President, Comrade Eyam Abeng |
President of the association, Eyam Abeng made the call while speaking with newsmen recently in Calabar.
Abeng who commended the State Governor, Senator Ben Ayade for increasing the University subvention however charged the government to invest more in education especially in CRUTECH.
He said that with the state being so fortunate to become the first in Nigeria to have two Professors at the helms of affairs, expectations are high on the achievements of the administration in the education sector.
While noting that successive governments have not really given the varsity the attention needed, he appeal to members of the state house of assembly who are currently working on the 2018 budget to give special consideration to CRUTECH as the state only owned University.
According to him "You know the United Nations has recommended that 26% of the annual budget of member states be devoted to education. Unfortunately, Nigeria as a county has not been able to achieve this since the recommendation even when our education sector is seriously in intensive care that requires urgent attention.
"Howbeit, we in Cross River have been so fortunate to have two Professors who spent their formative years in the University at the helms of affairs. Expectations are high and people want to see them perform better than previous administrations especially in the education sector.
"While we commend the administration of Senator Prof. Ben Ayade for increasing CRUTECH monthly subvention, we also want to charge the government for better budgetary allocation for the institution".
The President added that " Nothing will be wrong if Cross River State become the first state in Nigeria to meet the UN recommendation of 26% budget allocation to education. In fact, it's something many people are looking forward to as we are known as pace setters.
"Therefore I want to appeal to the members of the House of Assembly that while working on the 2018 budget, specific interest should be given to CRUTECH. It will interest you to know that since the inception of the institution, the state government has not erected a single structure in the university yet students are in dire of theatre halls, hostels amongst other pressing things".
