Unical VC assures freshmen of conducive learning environment

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Zana Akpagu has reiterated his administration’s commitment towards improving on academic facilities in the institution in order to provide a conducive learning environment for new students.

Prof. Akpagu who stated this during the 2017/2018 orientation programme for freshmen said the core mandate of his administration is the promotion of academic excellence, a cogent reason, he would continue to improve on facilities in the institution to make it conducive for students to excel in their chosen profession.

The vice chancellor who congratulated the freshmen for braving the odds by securing admission into the institution urged them to take their studies seriously.

He said UNICAL has become a first choice tertiary institution in the country because students have made it conspicuous on the world map and urged them to continue doing the things that will place the institution on a higher pedestal for effective service delivery.

This is even as he urged them to shun cultism and other negative vices capable of jeopardizing their future.

He said, ‘’ Cultism is no longer fashionable; you can lose your life in the process. Be self reliant and take responsibility for your learning so that you can make a difference’’
Prof. Akpagu also disclosed that new classrooms, hostels and recreational facilities would be built in no distant time, stressing that the welfare of students remain a major priority of his administration.

The Vice Chancellor said plans are also in top gear to build an ultra modern medical centre to cater for the health needs of students.

In her remarks, the Bursar of the institution, Mrs. Beatrice Igwe, urged the freshmen to ensure that the pay their fees, which she said, would make them bonafide students of the institution.

She urged them to always pay their fees by themselves to avoid been duped by some unscrupulous elements on campus.

Also speaking, the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Moses Abang, who reeled out the institution’s rules and regulations, said indecent dressing by students would not be condoned.

The Registrar who was represented by the Deputy Registrar (senior Establishment), Mr. Gabriel Usang urged the freshmen to concentrate on their studies and desist from engaging in unproductive ventures.

The University librarian, Dr. Mrs Nkoyo Edem who tutored the freshmen on effective use of library urged them to register in order to avail themselves the opportunity to use the library for reading and research, adding that the library is well equipped.

Also, the Chief security officer (CSO) of the institution, Mr. Jarlath Abang   who spoke on’ security consciousness’ on campus, urged the freshmen to be vigilant and security conscious even as he charged them to report cases of criminal activities to the security department of the institution.

The CSO who was represented by the Deputy Chief Security officer, Mr. Usani Okon said UNICAL parades a very formidable security outfit and will not hesitate to deal decisively with any student who engages in criminal activities.

The orientation program also featured cultural dances and comedy shows.
