Certificate Forgery : Unical Suspends Lecturer Indefinitely

A Lecturer in the Department of Linguistic and African Languages, University of Calabar (Unical), Dr. Eyo Mensah who is standing trial for certificate forgery has been slammed with indefinite suspension by the University.

Eyo was dragged before the  High Court of Cross River State by the State's Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) over a petition by the immediate past Vice Chancellor of Unical, Prof. James Epoke over certificate racketeering (forging and selling certificates to students).

It will be recalled that the High Court sitting in Calabar and presided over by Justice Emelia Ibok recently granted a motion exparte by prosecution counsel, Eno Eyamba, seeking to continue with criminal charges against the accused.

Banking on the development, Moses Abang, Registrar of the University, in a letter said that the University has ordered the immediate and indefinite suspension of the Don.

According to the letter which was sighted by our reporter, Eyo has been directed to handover all the University properties in his custody to the Head of his department.

The Don, within the period of the suspension is to be placed on half salary even as he has been directed to stop participating in all official functions including membership of and representation on University committees and bodies.

"I regret to inform you that the Vice Chancellor in exercise of the powers conferred on him by the laws of the University has directed your immediate and indefinite suspension from the services of the University of Calabar.

The directive is based on a careful consideration of recent development in a case of certificate forgery implicating you and for which reason the university has been requested to release you for trial in the court of law. The case under reference is suit No.HC/MSC.67/2018 before the High Court of Cross River State of Nigeria in Calabar Judicial division and presided over by Hon. Justice Emelia Ibok.

Accordingly, you have been relieved of all responsibilities to the University of Calabar forthwith, including teaching, administration of examinations, handling of students scripts and all official contacts with students, all administrative functions, membership of and representation on University committees and bodies and all such University of Calabar services", the statement reads in part.
