Buhari's aide commences rehabilitation of 28-yr-old Court building in Ugep

Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, Chairman, Special Presidential Panel On Recovery of Public Properties (SPIP),

Chairman of the Special Presidential Panel On Recovery of Public Properties (SPIP), Chief Okoi Obono-Obla has commenced the rehabilitation of a court hall built by the former  Chairman of Yakur local government area of Cross River State, late Barrister Inyang Arikpo in 1991.

Obono-Obla who also doubles as the Special Assistant on Prosecution to the President announced this yesterday, May 26, 2019 via a Facebook post in his personal account @Okoi Obono-Obla.

The previous Chief Magistrate Court hall built by the colonial masters about 89 years ago was converted by the Cross River state government to a district High Court in 1991 thereby prompting the then Chairman to build another hall for the court.

About ten years ago, fire gutted the Chief Magistrate Court, Ugep and since then nothing has been done by the government leading the court to be using a small room in the district court originally built as a magistrate court in 1930 by the colonial masters.

Worried by the untold hardship and discomfort faced by litigants, legal practitioners and staff of the court, Chief Obono-Obla and his wife, Barrister (Mrs) Justina Oka Obono-Obla last week commenced rehabilitation of the building as part of efforts to give back to the society.

He said "The old Ugep Court Hall was probably built in the colonial period  to serve as a Customary Court for the Yakurr people in the 1930s . In the 1970s it was converted into a Chief Magistrate’s Court to serve the district now constituting present Abi and Yakurr Local Government areas .

"In 1991, the government of Cross River State decided to create a division of the High Court in Ugep to serve Abi and Yakurr Local Government Areas ; it then decided to covert the old Magistrate’s Court building to the High Court . Consequently, the then Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Council , late Barrister Inyang Arikpo built the Chief Magistrate’s Court, Ugep.

"Regrettably , the Chief Magistrate’s Court , Ugep was gutted by fire almost eight (8) years ago ! Since then , the Chief Magistrate’s Court,  has no sitting room ; and the Court has been using a small  room belonging to the District Court, Ugep , which is not conducive at all , thereby subjecting litigants , legal practitioners and staff alike  to untold hardship and discomfort.

"As a way of giving back to the community, I have decided to renovate the Chief Magistrate’s Court, Ugep with the support of my wife , Barrister Justina Oka Obono-Obla and well wishers . Renovation and restoration works started on Saturday the 25 May 2019".

Recall that last year, the SPIP Boss renovated the abandoned Ijima Science Academy and a Primary Healthcare Centre in Yakur local government area and handed same to the Cross River State government.
