Dr Gertrude Nnanjar, lecturer in the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, University of Calabar has charged youths in Cross River State to embrace entrepreneurship for socioeconomic development.

Dr Nnanjar, who was delivering a paper on Sunday in Ikom Local Government Area, entitled "Enterpreneurship: A Panacea For Unemployment" at the award and dinner night organised by the National Youth Council of Nigeria, IKom chapter, noted that with the decline in 'white collar jobs', in the country, there was the need for youths to think outside the box hence engaging in small innovative businesses is the way forward.

She however noted that countries who had encouraged entrepreneurship, have drastically reduced the level of unemployment and other social vices perpetrated by the youths.

According to her, it is only  through quality education of the youth that Nigeria could produce entrepreneurs who could establish and manage businesses of their own.

"Education plays a vital role in the social, political and economic development of any nation hence the need to educate the citizenry on entrepreneurship", she said.

Also speaking, Mr Goddy Oko, Proprietor, Foresight Schools, Ikom, admonished the youths to be innovative in any path the chose to pursue, adding that the world is becoming competitive than ever before.

Earlier, the Ikom Chapter Chairman of NYCN, Mr Kasetima Ayiba Nentui said the event was to celebrate the achievements of illustrious sons and daughters of Ikom, who have contributed positively to the area.

Some of the award recipients included Mr Goddy Oko, Hon Fred Osim, member, Cross River State House of Assembly among others.
