The University of Calabar Senate has abolished comprehensive examinations for PhD programmes in the institution.

The decision was reached at the 217th Senate meeting of the University which held today, March 12, 2019 at the institution's Senate Chambers.

Disclosing the decision of the Senate, Public Relations Officer of the varsity, Mr. Eyo Effiong in a short message posted on Unical WhatsApp platform, said that the decision is with immediate effect.

"The Senate of the University of Calabar has officially abolished comprehensive exams for Ph.d  programmes in the institution with effect from today, 12th September, 2019.

"This decision was taken  at the  217th  Senate meeting of the University of Calabar", the message reads.

Recall that before now, PhD students after the completion of their course work were subjected to another non-evaluative exams to qualify them to progress to the next stage which is writing of dissertation.

The Senate while directing the University Graduate School Board to fine-tune the new policy which is likely to put an end to the compulsory course work maintained that the old policy was retrogressive as most Universities have abolished the system.

Post graduate studies, according to the Senate, is a research based programme as such this new policy will allow students ample time to concentrate on research work.
