Obudu Mountain Resort Workers Commence Strike Over Unpaid Salaries/Allowances

Obudu Mountain Resort workers yesterday proceeded on another strike over 12 months unpaid salaries from 2014 to date, including leave allowances.

Acting General Manager of the resort, Alia Celsius, confirmed to CrossRiverWatch this morning that the workers have gone on strike.

But governor Ayade's SA Ranch, Ability Akwaji, told CrossRiverWatch that it is a warning strike and negotiation with the workers have begun, to resolve the issues.

He assured that the workers will return to work in no time.


He said: Yes, the workers started strike yesterday but it is a warning strike. We have started negotiation and it will be resolved within two days. It is not going to last."

In January 2014, CrossRiverWatch reported that a disagreement between junior staff and the management of the Resort over 15% end of year bonuses for workers led to an industrial action by the junior staff leading to effective shut down of activities at the Resort.

Mr Tony Bassey, who was the Director of Cross River Tourism Development Board, at the time, told CrossRiverWatch that the strike started when the junior workers demanded for bonuses of 2011 for which they have signed an Agreement with the Management to wave since the Resort did not make profit that year.

According to Mr Bassey, the Management of the Resort believed that since an Agreement had been signed between the two parties to wave the 2011 bonuses, the management decided to stretch the payment to cover 2012, 2013, and 2014 since the workers had agreed to wave off the 2011 bonuses."

But CrossRiverWatch gathered that even after agreeing to wave their one year bonuses,  the workers were still not paid till date as government failed to keep its promise.
