Unical To Build 400 Rooms Ultramodern Hostel

Committed to improving students welfare on campus, Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Zana Akpagu has revalidated an agreement to construct a 400 room ultra-modern, state-of-the-art hostel for the students.

Signing the agreement for the construction of the hostel which is to be funded via a Public Private Partnership (PPP), Prof Akpagu said Unical was way behind in taking advantage of the gains of PPP.

While thanking the Private Partners, Windsworth Group for the laudable initiative, the Vice Chancellor pledge management’s co-operation adding that, he remains committed to doing everything humanly possible to facilitate the project.

In a remark, an official of the Private Partners, Ambassador Akpan Ade Obi-Odu while expressing gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, described Prof. Zana Akpagu as a dynamic and hard working person, right from his days in the state executive council.

He noted that Unical as a 2nd Generation University has gone beyond waiting for the government for everything, adding that he was happy to be able to partner with the University in her quest to entrenched sustained growth and development in all ramifications.

In a Separate Chat, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Windsworth Reality and Resources Ltd, Majem Ajuyah said the hostel which is for both male and female students is a  400 room all en suite capacity hostel that can comfortably accommodate 1600 students.

Describing the hosted as the largest single hostel in West Africa when completed, the CEO said the project is jointly financed by Windsworth Group and African Plus Pension PFM, adding that, it is the 1st of its kind to be funded using pension fund.

According to him, the hostel which is designed like a 3-star hostel with a large reception area to cater for visitors promises a 24 hours light, water and security, emphasizing that entry into the rooms in via security card system is to be provided by a South African firm
Other features of the hostel include a reaching room on every floor, as well as, kitchen and laundry Ares on what he described as “coin laundry system” that is quite cheaper than what the “Any work guys” can offer.

An obviously elated Bursar of the University of Calabar, Mrs. Beatrice Igwe reiterated Management’s commitment to the project and also pledged to do all that is necessary to ensure that it was delivered on schedule.
