BREAKING : Senator drags to court over $10,000 debt, threat to life

The Senator representing Akwa Ibom Southern Senatorial District, Nelson Asuquo Effiong,  has been slammed with multiple suits for threat to life, blackmail and failure to repay the sum of $10, 000 he borrowed from one Nsedu Bassey Onyile to fund his campaign in 2015.

We gathered that Onyile, a Nigerian who is based in the United States, has known the Senator for more than 10 years. Sometime in February 2015, the Senator approached her for a loan of Ten Thousand Dollars ($10, 000) to fund his campaign to contest for Senate and she sent the money through one Ante E. Okwong on the 18th of March, 2015.

According to findings, the money was sent through a bank of America wire transfer which Ante E. Okwong acknowledged. The Senator also acknowledged receipt of the money and promised to pay back by August 2015.

However, the Senator according to Nsedu's Lawyer, First Baba Isa has not been able to repay the money since then instead gas resorted to threatening and blackmailing her.

The lawyer said that he has written several letters on her behalf to persons and institutions like the Senate President, the Archbishop of Methodist Church, Abuja where the Senator worships and is a knight but the efforts to recover the money have been fruitless.

According the lawyer, “Yes. We are in court. We have filed a writ to recover the said money and we have also filed a Fundamental Right matter to enforce her right to life which is being threatened by the Senator.”.

Isa added that the matter has been reported to the Police.

“The case of threat to life, especially, was reported at the Force CID, Area 10, Abuja and the case was assigned to one Inspector Ibe. I was told the Senator was invited and went to the police station to give his statement but nothing has been done about it for no apparent reason other than the suspect is a senator; so we have to go to court.”

“You see this threat to her life by the Senator has made our client afraid to come into Nigeria to attend to some business concerns which she does almost annually and this has caused her millions of naira. Well, the matter is already in court and I will want to avoid commenting extensively on it. It’s just that things like these can make one really ashamed of being a Nigerian. A Senator, our Senator, I mean a Nigerian Senator should not be involved in this kind of issue", he said.

Efforts to get the Senator to react on the issue was unsuccessful..
