INVESTIGATION : Naira rain as 9 candidates jostle for UCTH Medical Director

The jostle for who becomes the next Chief Medical Director,CMD of University of Calabar Teaching , UCTH, has taken a new dimension as some candidates lobbied the board members with cash and gift items to curry their favour which is no less  than the  corruption war  waged by the Buhari led  administration of Nigeria.

Investigations show that some of the candidates gave out cash ranging from N200,000 to N1m to the Board members to score them high during the interview session.

Membership of the Board, made up of 13persons, were drawn from external (7) and internal (6) including representatives from Ministry of Health and Nigeria Medical Association.

The advertisement for selection of new Chief Medical Director,  which was well publicized on some National Dailies, had about eleven applicants for the job .

The interview for the selection was held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 and 11 candidates applied for the plum job; 2 were screened out and 9 remained.

Findings showed that the board members started arriving on Sunday, January 14, 2019 and were checked into Transcorp Hotels.

An impeccable source revealed that on  arrival, some staff of Corporate Affairs unit of the UCTH welcomed them at the airport and handed over a gift item.

“At their hotel room, some candidates were said to have given them cash ranging between N200, 000 and N400 0000 soliciting for their cooperation during the interview session.

The source also revealed that  what broke the camel’s back was the  fat envelops said to contain about N1m cash handed over to each of the board members by one of the leading candidates in the race.

The Director of Administration, DA, Mr Archibong, who is a staunch supporter of the candidate, his kinsman, is alleged to have coordinated the cash gift using staff of Corporate Affairs to execute the  plot.

One Dr Chris  Enoch, a board member representing NMA, was his ally on the plot to install their” favourite” candidate.

More shocking was the alleged involvement of the Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs. Eyo Ita, who is said to be behind the move to install one of the candidates, who is her kinsman. It is alleged that she provided part of the cash splashed on the board members to ensure her candidate came top.

Further checks show that the massive cash worked magic as Prof Ekpeme Ekpeme, the DA and HOSF candidate came top, with Prof Edet Ikpi and Prof Ngim Ngim coming second and third respectively.

The camp of Ikpeme , headed by DA and allegedly  bankrolled by HOS, have been celebrating the outcome and thumbing their chest for the job well done.

Another source familiar with the matter disclosed  that Ikpeme sponsors raised over N20m for the project.

However, the three names would soon be forwarded to the Minister for onward transmission to the Presidency who would now appoint from any of the three as the next CMD.

Further checks revealed that the chairman of the board, Col Mohammad Abdul, is very disgusted at the massive exchange of cash and some tricks employed by some of the candidates and Board members during the process.

When contacted on phone, the CMD, Prof Thomas Agan, refused to pick calls put through to him, but close sources said he is not interested in who takes over from him since he is about to vacate office soon.

  1. I won't write this if I were you. This is libelous. I hope they don't take action against you. You may have a lot to defend.
