BREAKING : Presidency upholds Akpagu's appointment

Barely hours after a court ruling dismissing a suit challenging the appointment of Prof. Zana Akpagu as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar went viral, another document sighted by our reporter has shown that the Presidency through the Ministry of Education has issued a white paper upholding the appointment.

Akpagu, a Professor of Modern Languages and former Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration of the University was appointed a Vice Chancellor by the Governing Council of the University in 2015 after emerging with the highest scores in the selection process.

Some of his opponents, despite him extending olive branch to them after the selection process by appointing them into sensitive offices, eent ahaah to petition his appointment to the Presidency and the FEC alleging irregularities in the process.

The Presidency constituted a Presidential panel to investigatet theallegations raised in the petitions and make necessary recommendations to the Ministry of Education for necessary action.

At the end of the investigation according to a document obtained by our reporter, Prof. Akpagu's appointment was uphold as the committee noted that the governing council of the University did not breach any extant laws in his appointment as the 10th VC of the institution.

Conveying the report of the panel to the governing council of the institution, the Honourable Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu in a letter, noted that the allegation of breach of procedure in the appointment of Prof. Akpagu was false.

According to the letter, the findings revealed that "The governing council of the University of Calabar had followed all the processes in consonance with extant laws and guidelines. The process of scoring and taking the average of all scores by the selection committee was in line with convention in all Federal Universities. It is therefore difficult to challenge the integrity of the score given to candidates by individual members of the selection committee".

After stating the findings, the committee further made a recommend to the Federal Ministry of Education that "the outcome of the selection and appointment process for the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar be allowed to stand".

Adamu added that the recommendation of the panel was upheld by the Ministry of Education.
