Unical immortalises ex-Librarian as family bequeaths Library to varsity

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu has instructed the naming of the Departmental Library in the Department of Library and Information Science after a one time Librarian of the University, Late Very Rev. Prof. Olu Olat Lawal.

He said that the gesture was a mark of honour and in appreciation of his immense contributions to the development of the University Library, and Library and Information Science as a programme.

The Vice Chancellor made the pronouncement while interacting with the widow of the Late iconic Librarian, Dr. (Mrs ) Jumoke Lawal who was in his office to formally present over 400 book titles covering a wide range of disciplines to the University.

Prof. Akpau who described the gesture as an everlasting legacy, added that the institution is ever so grateful and could not express  such gratitude enough, saying," on a personal note, he took me like a son."

Responding to a prayer by Dr. (Mrs) Lawal, the University helmsman said  the Late Librarian was a friend to all and gave assurances that Management will do exactly as the family wishes.

In an earlier remark, Dr. (Mrs) Jumoke Lawal said her husband was a lover of books and has a lot of books in so many other disciplines, adding that, as a family, she and her children agreed to give the books to the University of Calabar; an Institution he loves so much.

The rather emotive ambience was further accentuated as she appealed to the Vice Chancellor to kindly do all within his powers in ensuring that the Department the Late Prof. Olu Lawal created, Library and Information Science  have what they need for accreditation.

Also present to witness the brief but significant event were the Deputy Vice Chancellors Academic and Administration, Prof. Uche Amalu and Prof (Mrs) Lucy Udida respectively, as well as, the incumbent University Librarian, Dr. (Mrs) Nkoyo Edem.
