Bishops write Buhari, demand release of Leah Shaibu, protection of Christians

The Board of Bishops of the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E) Zion Church have written to Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari demanding the immediate release of Leah Shaibu, a teenage girl abducted by the deadly terrorists group, Boko Haram as well as protection of all Christians in the country.

This was contained in a statement issued
at the end of the Board's meeting held in Orlando, Florida between July 10 - 12, 2019 and signed by twelve Bishops including Right Reverend Prof. Uduak Effiong, presiding Prelate of the Eastern West Africa Episcopal District of the Church.

The Bishops lamented in the statement that despite the Federal government securing the release of other abducted girls, Leah Shaibu who was held back because she refused to denounce her Christian faith has remained in her abductors custody.

The board also demanded the immidiate restoration of all the Christians displaced by Boko Haram sect and Fulani Herdsmen to their ancestral homes.

According to the statement, the Board demanded "The mediate release of the teenage girl, Leah Shaibu, from her abductors, as well as secure the release of all other persons abducted by Boko Haram leaders and the Fulani herdsmen.

The immediate restoration of displaced Christians to their ancestral lands, and ensure their adequate security as citizens, as they engage in their various economic activities". 

The statement added that, the Bishops wants "The engagement of key political and religious leaders in serious discussions with the intent of addressing the perceived marginalization, islamization, and militarization, which have presented grave threats to the nation's unity and development.

"The institution of fairness, equality, transparency, inclusiveness, and respect of the rule of law in the conduct of business of government in Nigeria". 

The of Bishops maintained that if the steps recommended are promptly and sincerely taken, peace, unity, and development would be restored in Nigeria as well as give opportunities to the teaming young Nigerians to channel their energies and potentials to very positive engagements for the benefit of all 
humanity. 

They however pledged to continue praying for President Buhari, and the people of Nigeria even as they urged that the  recommendations should be given due consideration.
