BREAKING : Akpagu hits another milestone as Unical Medical College gets 5-year full re-accreditation

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu,  renowned for hitting major  milestones with enviable  new records has again set another record.

This is as the University's College of Medical Sciences has been granted full re-accreditation for the next 5 years by Universities regulatory body.

Recall that it is a routine  tradition in the academics that regulatory bodies visit Universities and colleges periodically to evaluate programmes for validation or otherwise.

The Unical College of Medical Sciences comprises four (4) Faculties: Faculty of Medicine with departments of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Community Medicine, Family Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Radiology, Otorhinolaryngology, Anaesthesiology, Ophthalmology, Pathology, Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Medical Microbiology & Parasitology, Orthopaedics and Traumatology and Psychiatry.

The Faculty of Dentistry with 5 departments which include:Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Child Dentistry, Oral Biology, Orthodontics and Community Dentistry .

Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences also has five departments namely: Anatomical sciences, Human Physiology, Biochemistry/Human Nutrition & dietetics, and Pharmacology.

The fouth, Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences also has five faculties which are Medical laboratory Science, Radiography and Radiological Sciences, Nursing Science, Public health and Physiotherapy

In November last year, a peer review panel from the regulatory body for medical schools in Nigeria, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) visited the University for evaluation of its medical programmes and the institution since then has been expecting the panel's report.

As it has become a trademark in the Prof. Akpagu's results oriented administration, when the report finally arrived in a letter dated January 23, 2020 and addressed to the VC, the MDCN Registrar, Dr. T. A. B. Sanusi disclosed that the council has approved full five years re-accreditation for the Medical College.

According to the letter, "Council at it 4th plenary meeting held on 19th December, 2019 at Abuja considered the report of the visitation team sent to your Medical School on 11th and 12th November, 2019, and approved the re-accreditation of the college of Medical Sciences.

"By this approval, the MBBCH programme has been re-accredited for the next five (5) years with effect from November 2019".

On the request for an increase in the admission quota for the programmes by the University, Sanusi hinted in the letter that the MDCN will consider the request soon.
