By Onigah Joseph

The Director, Centre For General Studies (CGS), University of Calabar, Prof. Francisca Bassey has announced that students with the best results in General Studies (GSS) in the current academic session will be rewarded with scholarship.

Bassey made the announcement recently while addressing students at a rally organized in the institution by the Students' Union Government through the Director of Information, Comrade Onigah Joseph Egidi, tagged, "5,000 Walk Campaign Against Sex for Grades"

The Director who was at the forefront of the campaign said that to encourage students to study hard, she was going to reward all year one students who made grade "A" with a year scholarship while the student with highest overall scores will be get two years scholarship.

"We are here to encourage you. Let's know what's happening around you. Your body is not a place for anyone to pleasure on in return for grades. Dress decently and pay attention to your studies. You need counsel, you need advice don't be afraid to reach out to us.

As a mother and your Director, I want to use this moment to encourage you, unfortunately, some students may not fall within these categories to benefit.

For the year students, I want to assure you that those that would score straight 'As' in the upcoming GSS examination, for a start, I will be giving them one year scholarship ranging from Arts, Sciences, Medical and Humanities from next academic session. Then, the overall best may have two years scholarship", she said.

She maintained that "this is to show that we are not just talking. We are encouraging you that when you study, it pays. Subsequently, we will think on how to do it better; maybe across the various faculties and probably extend it to three years"

Bassey assured that "I'm a woman of my word and the Students' Union Government can attest to that. I encourage them to hold me accountable".

Bassey who also doubles as Cross River State Coordinator of Africa Women in Leadership added that "sex for grades is a two way thing; some students pay little attention to their studies because they prefer making sexual advances to Lecturers in turn for grades".
