Unical Withdraws Corruption Charges Against Ex-Busar, Peter Agi

Former Unical Bursar, Peter Agi

The University of Calabar on Thursday withdrew the corruption suit filed against former Bursar, Mr. Peter Agi and his wife, Isioma Agi at the Federal High, Calabar.

Consequently, on Thursday, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, the presiding Judge dismissed the matter and discharged Agi and his wife after the prosecuting counsel filed a letter from the University to discontinue the matter.

Agi, who was initially arraigned on seven count charge in suit No FHC/CA/CR/03 2018 which he pleaded not guilty, was alleged to have used his official position as bursar to defraud the university of various sums.

He allegedly transferred the said sums to his wife, Isioma Agi, and other fictitious persons’ account, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 1, subsection 2(b) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act.

He is alleged to have defrauded the university to the tune of NGN7.3 million by transferring same to his wife’s account between August 2014 and July 2016.

He was also alleged to have unlawfully transferred N17.5 million to various fictitious accounts which contravene the 2011 Money Laundering Act.

The charges were later amended and his wife, Isioma was his co-defendant. However, the wife was later discharged.

Agi was first sacked by the Varsity and challenged his sack at the National Industrial Court which upheld the sack. The Court of Appeal, upheld the decision of the lower Court.
