Sports Devt: Minister To kick-start Grassroot Competitions In UKALU

Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh speaking during a recent reception in UKALU communities

In a bid to enhance sports development in the country, the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh has expressed his desire to institute grassroots sports competition in Ukpe, Alege and Ubang (UKALU) communities in Obudu local government area of Cross River State.

Enoh stated this during a recent reception organised by the UKALU communities to honour him and his Special Assistant (Administration), Dr. Richard Orim.

The Minister said that the sports ministry under him is committed to securing the future of sports in the country by focusing on developing sports at the grassroots.

He reiterated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was committed to harnessing and nurturing talents across the federation to limelight.

According to him, "more than 30 years ago, I walked through this land. 1989, 1990, I was posted here as a school teacher. I believe that even people that I met did not think that I would stay. Why? I came from Etung, I came from Ikom especially in those days when we were reputed to be cocoa people, cocoa farmers; we were reputed to be people that had abundance. So, they couldn’t understand how a young man from Etung will come and teach here. But I taught here for one full year.

I believe that there was a reason that I was sent to Ukpe in 1989, and I believe that God wanted me to come back to this land. That is why God led my path and that of Dr. Richard to cross. I believe that there's reason for everything that happens.

I'm Minister of Sports today because God has a reason for it and everyday I go to the office to find that purpose. I think that we should start up sports competition here to see what we can get out of here. The President is very interested in harnessing talents at the grassroots and I'm sure that we can bring a lot of superstars from here".
