Encomiums as Staff, Friends Organize Surprise Birthday Party For UNICROSS VC
Tributes poured in on Sunday April 19, 2025, as Professor Francisca Bassey, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), was celebrated at a surprise birthday event held in her honour at Hogis Luxury Suite, Calabar.
Although her birthday fell on April 14, close associates and well-wishers organised the gathering to recognise both the milestone and her impact on the university community and beyond.
Speakers at the event commended Professor Bassey’s leadership and personal qualities, offering prayers and goodwill for her continued success.
A member of the organising committee, Engr. Romanus Ogar, noted that the celebration was intended not only to mark her birthday but also to acknowledge her influence on the lives of others. He described her as “a mother, sister, teacher and mentor” who remains dependable and exceptional in her service.
Chairman of the occasion, Barrister Rosemary Archibong, a former Commissioner for Information and later Commerce in Cross River State, praised the organisers for keeping the event a surprise, humorously describing it as a “successful coup.”
She said the gathering reflected the deep affection people have for the Vice Chancellor and emphasised that the celebration was not about age but about “exquisite vintage,” highlighting wisdom and experience. Barrister Archibong described Professor Bassey as disciplined, focused and God-fearing, adding that such qualities are essential for success and leadership.
In a personal reflection, the Vice Chancellor’s elder sister, Pastor (Dr.) Esther Rex Fubara-Manuel, spoke about her spiritual journey, recalling her conversion to Christianity and attributing her progress and preservation to divine guidance. She encouraged associates to recognise the role of faith in achieving lasting success.
Speaking on behalf of her children, her first son, Mr. David Hakeem, described her as caring, resilient and hardworking. In an emotional tribute, he said: “If I am to be born again… I will beg God to create you again so that I can be your son.”
Dr. Victor Ndifon, Acting Dean of Student Affairs and a member of the University’s Governing Council, highlighted Professor Bassey’s commitment to student welfare and institutional development.
He stated that she responds promptly to student-related issues and works tirelessly to address challenges facing the university. He also expressed appreciation to the Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, for her appointment.
Similarly, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Thomas Ojikpong, described her as an accomplished administrator and innovator, urging her to remain focused despite criticism and assured her of continued support from those who understand her vision.
The President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Comrade Favour Ogar, commended the Vice Chancellor for prioritising student needs, citing initiatives such as the provision of free Wi-Fi, and the renovation of hostels and classrooms as key achievements of her administration.
Other speakers, including Mrs. Ekanem Henshaw and Dr. Moses Edim, also paid tribute, offering prayers and expressing admiration for her leadership and character.
The event was attended by university staff, family members and other dignitaries, and featured entertainment, dining and social interaction.
