Senator Kalu condemns xenophobic attacks in South Africa, urges swift government action

Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has strongly condemned the recent wave of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa, describing them as unprovoked and unacceptable.

Speaking on the floor of the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, Kalu joined fellow lawmakers in denouncing the attacks and calling for immediate, coordinated action to protect Nigerians living abroad.

During the debate, the senator expressed full support for resolutions urging the Federal Government to take decisive diplomatic and security measures to halt the violence and ensure the safety of its citizens.

Kalu particularly stressed the need for deliberate and targeted protection for Nigerians from the South East region, including indigenes of Abia North, many of whom he noted are legitimately engaged in business activities in South Africa.

He warned that continued attacks on Nigerians threaten not only lives and livelihoods but also strain diplomatic relations between both countries.

“The Nigerian government must remain resolute in defending the dignity, security, and fundamental rights of its citizens, wherever they may be,” Kalu stated.

The Senate is expected to follow up with relevant authorities to ensure that the resolutions translate into concrete actions aimed at safeguarding Nigerians overseas.
