UNICAL alumnus heads World Bank's health workforce project in Liberia

The University of Calabar, in furtherance of her mission to be an internationally acknowledged training institution, has again made history as one of her Alumni, Dr. Edet Ikpi, recently got appointed as the Chair of Surgery for the Health workforce project of the World Bank in Liberia.

The health workforce project was introduced by the World Bank as a medium to long term project aimed at helping The Republic of Liberia build its Specialist Health workforce, following the decimating effect of the Liberian civil war and the Ebola crises in that country.

Dr. Edet Ikpi, a 1989, graduate of the College of Medicine, University of Calabar, was appointed following a rigorous and highly competitive international interview process coordinated by the Icahn School of Medicine in Mount Sinai, New York and the Liberian Post graduate Medical Council.

Following his success, Dr. Ikpi was appointed Professor and Chair of the Faculty of Surgery for the Liberian Post graduate Medical Council and Head of The Department of Surgery of John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, Liberia's only Teaching Hospital.

By this appointment, Dr. Ikpi will be responsible for the development of the curriculum and training of surgical residents of JFK Memorial Hospital as well as Medical students of the A. M. Dogliotti College of Medicine in Liberia.  Dr. Ikpi's mandate covers the reorganization and development of surgical education throughout the Republic Liberia

Dr. Ikpi's appointment is a further confirmation of the excellent training offered by the College of medicine in the University of Calabar and establishes the training received at university's medical school to be of International standing.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Zana Akpagu, has congratulated Dr. Ikpi on his well deserved promotion and has enjoined him to continue to positively promote the ideals of the University of Calabar.

The Vice Chancellor has further reaffirmed his commitment to repositioning the College of Medicine of Unical as an International Centre of Excellence for the training of medical Specialists. It will be recalled that the Vice Chancellor recently approved the Establishment of the Department of Urology, making the University of Calabar the only University in the country with a full fledged Department of Urology.

It is expected that with the giant strides which the University is making internationally, she will in no distant time produce the first indigenous Professor of Urology.
