Stakeholders responsible for poor standard of education in Nigeria - Prof. Nwadiani

Prof. Mon Nwadiani
Former Dean of faculty of Education, University of Benin, Prof. Mon Nwadiani said that critical stakeholders in the education sector were responsible for the poor standard of education in Nigeria.

The Don said this yesterday when he featured as a guest lecturer in the maiden Public Lecture organized by the department of Education Administration and Planning, University of Calabar, Unical.

The lecture with the theme: "University Education And Sustainable Development in Nigeria: Threats and Management Imperatives" took   place at Unical International Conference Centre.

Prof. Nwadiani while maintaining that there can only be sustainable development in Nigeria with improved standard of University education, he added that emphasis should be placed on skills and not certificate.

He decried the dwindling standard of education in Nigeria, attributing it to poor management by stakeholders in the sector.

"It is unthinkable that Nigeria is lagging behind in proper education planning in the 21st century. We need to encourage the emphasis on values and attitude among those who pass through our educational system.

True education particularly through formal schooling is much more than certification; this has become the main emphasis even in the labour market", he said.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University represented by the deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Prof. Uche Amalu while declaring the Lecture open expressed his pleasure with the leadership of the Department for organising the maiden edition of the public lecture series.

The VC lauded the department for being the second in the history of the University to hold a public lecture adding that topic of the lecture was timely.

He said that "Each time we have a problem in this University we run to faculty of Education, not because of so many other things but because we believe that the answer to our problem will be solved by those who plan and administer education in its all entirety.

We're pleased by the effort of the organizers of this event and let me specially commend the leadership of the department for being the second the history of the this institution to hold this kind of public lecture series".

Also speaking, the  Head of Department of Education Planning and Administration Prof. John Undie describe the occasion as epoch making stressing that the public lecture was organised to help fashion out proper management of human resources in the university.

He maintained that the lecture will help to tackle the problem of corruption in education sector and curb the draining education standard in the society.
