BREAKING: Unical ranked best university in Nigeria

The University of Calabar (Unical) has been ranked best in Non-academic ranking of Nigerian universities based on staff participation in review of National Universities Commission, NUC accreditation instruments.

In a letter sent to the Vice  Chancellor of Unical, Prof. Zana Akpagu and signed by Prof. Peter A. Okebukola, the ranking which also had NUC as a participating institution saw Unical garnered a total of 124 points to top other Nigerian universities.

The ranking which involved one hundred (121) public and private Universities in Nigeria and covered between January 2 to March 7, 2019 saw NUC topping the chart with 402 points.

Amadu Bello University which came third in the chart but second among universities had 106 points. University of Ibadan, University of Illorin, University of Benin scored 106, 705, 92 to fall in fourth, fifth and sixth positions respectively.

University of Nsuka, Usman Danfodio University, Obafemi Awolowo University, Michael Okpara university of Agriculture and University of Ibadan had 80, 80, 77, 71 and 68 each to make the top ten.

Among the criteria used in arriving at the ranking were undergraduate, postgraduate, part-time, affiliate, institutional and ODL.

All Vice Chancellors, Directors of Academic Planning, Directors of Quality Assurance and full Professors in the selected universities and NUC were invited to participate in the review exercise.

Okebukola in the letter explained that in line with best practices, universities with same scores  were  also ranked  and that the points were cumulative

He added that the ranking was  to encourage staff not to sit on the sidelines  but be part "of the new dispensation of consultations, consultations and consultations which is the hallmark of the regime of Professor Abubakar Rasheed",  Executive Secretary of NUJ.

Speaking on the issue, Unical VC, Prof. Akpagu said he was encouraged by the ranking and pledged to continue to work hard to ensure that the University would be rated as one of the best when the NUC release the academic ranking of Nigeria universities.

He said his administration was committed to improving Unical brand and making it not just one of the best in Nigeria but in the world.
