BREAKING : Unical best Mass Comm graduating Student to get N200k from NBC

The curriculum expansion policy of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Unical Prof. Zana Akpagu has again put the University in limelight as the National Broadcasting CommisionC, NBC has instituted endowment prize of N200,000 for the best graduating student in the newly established department of Mass Communication and Digital Media.

The department, established by Prof. Akpagu in 2017, 40 years after the establishment of the institution is barely two years old with only 100 and 200 level students.

NBC, in recognition of the department has written officially to the VC, informing him that the Commission was commencing a life endowment prize for the best graduating students of the department.

Antia Ekanem, Acting Head of Public Affairs of the Commission who signed the letter dated July 1, 2019 on behalf of the Director General  said that the initiative was geared towards encouraging young Nigerians to greater heights in the field of learning to become useful professionals in the media industry.

She added that "The duration of this funds shall last for life with the assumption that the amount, two hundred thousand (N200,000) shall be invested and the proceeds from the investment should be used for cash and book donation to the aforementioned 400 level Theatre Arts Broadcasting and Mass Communication graduating student".

Reacting, the elated VC thanked the Commission for the initiative and for selecting Unical as one of the institutions to benefit from the programme.

Prof. Akpagu who pledged to continue to do his best to attract more things to the University said that the initiative would go a long way to motivate students to study hard and  be more competitive.

He said the department of Mass Communication is designed to produce world class graduates, equipped with the skills and knowledge to address the contemporary challenges in the media sector in the 21st century.

It will be recalled that since Akpagu came on board, he has attracted many corporate organizantions, individuals and foreign governments including the Chinese government to institute scholarships and different kinds of endowment programme for different programmes in the institution.
