Unical Medical College : We'll not compromise standard - VC assures

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu has said that his administration would not rest on its oars in its avowed determination at maintaining good standards in the College of Medical Sciences.

Prof. Akpagu stated this when the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria accreditation team for Medicine and Surgery and Dentistry programmes  paid a working visit on him in his office.

The Vice Chancellor who described the College of Medical Sciences as the ‘flagship of the institution assured the accreditation team of his continuous support for the college to enable it churn -out qualified medical professionals, who will in turn,  address the health needs of citizens.

He said his administration would not compromise standards, a cogent reason he took it upon himself to address the infrastructural deficits which hitherto bedevilled the College.

Prof. Akpagu said, ‘’ The College of Medical Sciences has made us proud and that is why it is our flagship.

‘’When I came on board we addressed some infrastructural deficits in order to reposition the college for effective service delivery. We also activated Dentistry’’

While urging the accreditation team to scrutinize and point out the inadequacies in the course of their work, he also promised to strengthen the relationship between the institution and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, which according to him, would lead to increased output.

The University helmsman also called on the Medical Council to increase the admission quota for candidates seeking to study various courses in the College of Medical Sciences.

Earlier, the Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr. Tajudeen .A. Sanusi who led the accreditation team said Council has a responsibility to maintain standards in the medical practice, adding that they are also poised to ensure that a conducive environment is provided for medical practitioners to enable them deliver on their mandate.

He said due to the strategic importance of the College of Medical Sciences, the accreditation team would not hesitate to point out any inadequacy discovered and advise the institution accordingly.

According to the Registrar, without Medical Schools, Teaching Hospitals cannot be in existence hence the need for a robust synergy between the institution and its sister establishment.

Dr. Sanusi also said there was need for medically qualified persons to man the affairs of the Basic Medical Sciences to ensure professionalism.
