UNICAL bags prestigious ICAN award

The University of Calabar under the able leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Zana Akpagu has bagged the prestigious award of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN)

The University of Calabar was the only Tertiary Institution in the federation honoured with the award of “Excellence Capacity Building for Nigerian Youths” at the 2020 ICAN Merit Award Webinar, an historic event held online owing to the scourge of the 2019 COVID Pandemic.

The award which came in the ‘Corporate category’ singled out the institution for its support through Management towards continuous Professional Accounting Development in Nigeria, and outstanding development to the profession in the promotion of relevant capacity.

In his response, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Zana Akpagu said the award was an honour for the entire institution as he dedicated it to the collective effort of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, Staff and Students of the institution.

The Vice Chancellor who spoke through the Institutions’ Public Relations Officer, Mr Effiong Eyo noted that this feat which came in the course of his tenure in office as Vice Chancellor was heartwarming and a worthy testimony of his administration’s commitment to the rapid growth of the institution.

Prof Zana Akpagu said the winner’s mentality which makes exceptional things happen has come to stay and will be replicated in every area of the institutions’ academic and administrative circle.

He lauded the Head of Accounting Department, Dr(Mrs) Obal Usang,  Bursar, Mrs Beatrice Igwe and the Director of Audit, Mr Nicholas Agbo as well as all staff of the Accounting Department, Bursary department and Audit Unit for their exceptional commitment to excellence and partnership which has resulted in the honour.

The event was marked with speeches from the incumbent President of ICAN, Mazi Nnamdi Okwuadigbo, Chairman of Publications and Image Committee, Alhaji Haruna Yahaya and the Guest of Honour of the event, Otunba Olutola Senbore.

Awards in the event were given in three categories, Members which had 5 recipients, Non Members with 2 and Corporate category with 2 including the University of Calabar.
