OPINION : Jarigbe Agom : Indeed, Power Comes From God

Cross River North Senator-Elect, Jarigbe Agom

By Freedom Iripia

King Nebuchadnezzar according to the scripture was a powerful king who ruled over the Babylonian Kingdom for 600 years. He was so powerful that every creature dreaded him. But, he had a vision which Prophet Daniel interpreted to him. As captured in Daniel 4:17, the Prophet explained to the King that God gave him the vision "to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men".

Prophet Daniel also emphasized the supremacy of God to set up earthly authority in Daniel 2 :21 when he wrote that, "it is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings".

These scriptures and many others explained exactly what played out on Friday July 30th, 2021 in the battle for the soul of Cross River North Senate Seat. Finally, the Court of Appeal ended the battle with a ruling declaring sacking Senator Stephen Odey and replacing him with Rt. Hon. Jarigbe Agom.

Before the judgment, who would have imagined that a politician backed by the Governor as the case with Senator Odey can be defeated? It is a rare thing to happen Cross River State politics. Apart from Rt. Hon. Alex Egbonna who won as member representing Abi/Yakur federal constituency as an opposition candidate, it was either you're in the good books of the Governors or you forget about your ambition.

Many had written Agom off because they felt the status quo was going to  continue since Odey had the support of Governor Ben Ayade. But with Agom's Appeal Court victory, the jinx has been broken and God has shown that indeed, he gives power to whom he pleases, which most times don't depend on the whim and caprices of the Governor.

Those who followed and witnessed the contentious People's Democratic Party's Primary election can attest that Agom's victory was ordained from the beginning. Despite the maiming of some of his supporters, death of some and series of litigation post-Primary and the General election, he always won. The Senate which makes laws for the country even flouted ruling by the Apex court of the land, the Supreme Court, declaring Agom as winner.

Those lacking understanding of time and divine direction gave up. They mocked of him when he was denied swearing-in even after winning in both Appeal and Supreme Courts.

Like Joseph in the Bible whose brethren mocked, looked down and sold him out, those who were at the forefront agitating for "Ogoja for Senate" after the long tussle and the out-right refusal of the Senate President, Sen. Ahmad Lawal to obey the court ruling left, many forgot their first love and family, many left to protect the "food on the table" without thinking of tomorrow, some sold Ogoja out for pecuniary gains. Agom was deserted by many of his own, but his only hope and anchor was hinged on God; no wonder, the book of Lamentations 3:36 and 37 has always been his watchword.

Recall sometime during a thank you tour organized by former Senator Odey, precisely in Obudu, Chief Tony Udiandeye said "If you're not sent you cannot go, Jarigbe was not sent by anybody and he cannot steal the mandate of the people".

Agom has divulged and changed the popular notion that if you aren't sent by a "mere mortal" you cannot go, infact you can go as far as you want, you can also make it, once you have the backing of God and the people by your side. The Honourable, now Senator is loved by all and sundry, and was God's preferred candidate for the Cross River North Senatorial District seat.

Undiadeye had also contended that "Jarigbe will continue to contend with forces in the dark and will remain in the dark". But Today, the tides has changed. It seems he'll be the one to contend with forces.

People should know that "Man is not God". In all Agom's battle, God made sure every insurmountable mountain was made plain and every fury dark of the wicked one was averted.

Just like the Bible recorded in the book of Jeremiah  29:11 "For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the LORD, thoughts of Peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end". Who would have forseen Agom's expected end? It takes only those with Endurance, Perseverance and a determined heart.

Agom being a devoted Christian, surrendered all to God to take the wheel and God neither slept nor slumbered in his case throughout the whole struggle and tussle. He made sure the promise concerning him came to fruition.

Indeed, God was/is the pillar behind his success and emergence as a Senator representing Cross River North Senatorial District. This can only affirm the fact that Power and political position comes only from God. When it's your time, everything stands still and play to your favour.
