UNICROSS Deepens Ties With ICAN On Accounting Education

The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has deepened its collaboration with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to strengthen Accounting education and professional development in the university.

The initiative formed the core of discussions when the University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, received a delegation from the Calabar District Society of ICAN, led by Elder Gershom Davis, Secretary of the District Society, on a courtesy visit to her office on Wednesday, March 26, 2026.

Speaking during the visit, Prof. Bassey appreciated the ICAN delegation for the courtesy call and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to continuous learning and collaboration aimed at achieving high academic standards.

The Vice Chancellor assured the delegation of the University’s readiness to resolve the accreditation issues affecting the Accountancy programme, while seeking stronger collaboration with ICAN and other professional bodies to facilitate the process.

Earlier, Elder Gershom Davis, who represented the Chairman, Dr. Glory Effiong in the meeting, highlighted ICAN’s pivotal role in advancing accounting practice and outlined plans to strengthen engagement with the University.

He also proposed the establishment of an ICAN training centre in Calabar and assured the University of the professional body’s full collaboration to secure accreditation for the Accountancy programme.

While emphasizing that accreditation would enhance graduates’ professional prospects and ease their transition to chartered status, Elder Davis called for increased institutional support for staff and students, particularly in participating in ICAN’s Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) Programme, noting its importance for capacity building and professional competence.
